Most of us agree; the brownish color used for platoon chat SUCKS. Here's how to make it better: ... before we start, I recommend making a backup of the files involved (a total of 8KB of text files).
Making the chat window darker
Use a text editor (notepad) to open up the file <name>_ui.lst in your PlanetSide directory and locate the section that looks like this:
[Chat]
alignment=2
x=0
y=0
w=383
h=182
minimized=false
hover_opacity=0.7
normal_opacity=0.2
mode=true
Change the "normal_opacity" value to something a little higher, like 0.4 or 0.5. I ran mine on 0.4 and it looks great. Dark enough to read text, light enough to see through. Save it and ....
Changing the Platoon chat color
This time, open the <name>_options.lst file in notepad, and find the value called
setoption "color chat platoon" "#xxxxxx"
Change that value to SOMETHING ELSE!!! Not really, but I recommend #FFCCCC for a light peach color that works perfectly on the darker background. If you want it to be just normal white (like local chat), use #FFFFFF
Save that sucker and play the game. Enjoy the newly readable chat window. I don't know how this will react to new patches and such, but at least it works for now. If you screw it up and something doesn't work, just re-load the backup you made (you made a backup, right?) and try it again. Just make sure not to change anything else in those files, and to maintain any formatting, like quotes in the right place and stuff like that.
