Most of us agree; the brownish color used for platoon chat SUCKS. Here's how to make it better: ... before we start, I recommend making a backup of the files involved (a total of 8KB of text files).

Making the chat window darker

Use a text editor (notepad) to open up the file <name>_ui.lst in your PlanetSide directory and locate the section that looks like this:

[Chat]
alignment=2
x=0
y=0
w=383
h=182
minimized=false
hover_opacity=0.7
normal_opacity=0.2
mode=true

Change the "normal_opacity" value to something a little higher, like 0.4 or 0.5. I ran mine on 0.4 and it looks great. Dark enough to read text, light enough to see through. Save it and ....

Changing the Platoon chat color

This time, open the <name>_options.lst file in notepad, and find the value called
setoption "color chat platoon" "#xxxxxx"

Change that value to SOMETHING ELSE!!! Not really, but I recommend #FFCCCC for a light peach color that works perfectly on the darker background. If you want it to be just normal white (like local chat), use #FFFFFF

Save that sucker and play the game. Enjoy the newly readable chat window. I don't know how this will react to new patches and such, but at least it works for now. If you screw it up and something doesn't work, just re-load the backup you made (you made a backup, right?) and try it again. Just make sure not to change anything else in those files, and to maintain any formatting, like quotes in the right place and stuff like that.

I know these messages are old, but I changed my minimap opacity before and want to do it again. Could someone tell me if this file exists still because I can't find it. Maybe it's right in front of my nose!

Edit: I found it seconds later!

2nd Edit: I think messing with my settings and crap was a bad idea! PS isn't starting up... it goes to the 'updating' message and then stays like that, but I can choose my character and server! HELP!!!

3rd Edit: Grr... I restarted my computer and now PS won't even start! I click on my shortcut, and nothing it gets highlighted and goes to waiting mouse symbol thingy. Then nothing else happens! I went into my PS directory and the ps application has the standard symbol, but when i click on it, it says: "Please start planetside using the launchpad." Grr... do I have to reinstall PS or something!?

4th Edit: I think i'll have to reinstall PS. Just a question: will this erase anything of important besides my screenshots? Also, can I just delete my whole sony directory and put in CD?
I NEED HELP!!!

Yessir, yessir I am.
HOWEVER! I now have to do something to fix it... and I really have no idea what I did wrong. The latests problem/update/bad thingy is that I think mr TR CD is scratched or something. I tried to 'repair' PS, but I don't know what to do! To go days without PS is bad! Oh well, I guess I could just delete the folder and hope there's nothing in the registry or something that won't let me reinstall! I don't want to delete anything now, because I might not be able to get it back, at least not easily. I don't know what I could have done to freak planetside out like this, but I went into my files, the most recently modified was performance, and there is nothing in it when I open it with notepad. Could someone post theirs? Meanwhile, I am gonna go check my other important things.

Edit: PS is fixed.
