Well a bit off topic here, but I can't help but notice the Tux following we have in this outfit. I'll admit I am still a n00b when it comes to Linux and have a few questions.

You see, I'm a CS/Mathmatics major who has built his own systems sence '88. I've always wanted to go full Linux but school, games and the like have kept me under Microshaft's thumb. I've played around with Red Hat, SuSe, and Mandrake but can't really decide what distro I like more (truth is I don't know enough to say). Except for all my classes requiring VS.NET the only other app that would keep me from using is Planetside (EQ used to be the bitch, but I'm over that now). I was also limited by my raid controller till I blew the MBR on one drive in my stripe, so that's no longer an Issue. Any advice on which distro to use, and what windows combatability shell works best?

Personally I would recommend RedHat as a good place to start. It's got a lot of stuff you don't need, but it installs very easily and it's the most user friendly of the distros I've played with. Of course this is a discussion that promotes fanaticism, so you'll get different answers from different people :). But ultimately when I have a box I just want to work and don't want to spend time futzing with it, I whip out my RedHat CD's.

I'm a fan of red hat.....a lot of people get all uppity about it and claim its unpure and blah blah blah.....but, I've worked with it for about 4 years now and am used to its quirks.

Red hat is certainly one of the easiest for me....pop in a cd and click...it works. To maintain the distro, the redhat update tool is great. I've used it since redhat 7.1 and its never let me down.

I thik my first red hat distro was 5.x, but 6.1 is where I really go into it, Slackware before that.

Well, I've gone ahead and repartitioned my hard drive and have installed Red Hat 7.3. Problem is, I've gone and locked myself out of my windows partition some how. I went with LiLo for my boot loader and can't seem to get Windows to show up as an option. So I guess I'll play around with it for a while and see if I can play PS....if not then I guess I'll just figure out how to get my sound card to work and see if I can play PS under Linux.
