Glad to have jumped ship from Forty Deuce to SOV last night - those guys were starting to define unfun. Thanks to Elana (whom, since I know in RL - I have dirt on) and Rahl for setting up the invite and nudging me into a squad.

I hope I can be valuable, I've kinda fallen into a sniper role due to major suckage at other tasks. Sniping is fun, but my kill rate isn't too high as I usually seem to end up just wounding the heck out of enemies for others to finish off. I do enjoy being a nuisance however, and this role gives me plenty of opportunity to aggravate the other side...

cool stuff.. I like snipers in my squad... because I can never snipe and I hate snipers miles away trying to hit me while I am doing something more important.. I fear snipers more than Cloakers.

btw.. try to stay in SOI to get more exp..

Hehe, one of my major goals in planetside is to be annoying to the enemy. I enjoy pissing them off almost as much as killing them..

Ahhh, the sniper. If you enjoy griefing those reds (not grief in the PS context, but grief in the "make them want to /quit out of sheer frustration" type of grief) then this is the role for you. I have found that when defending a base, we are pretty much utility...knock down the HPs before they enter the gates, so the melee can clean up. Not glamourus. Sometimes you have to make your own fun:

This is a little story that happened last week, and probably the most fun I have had to date. A large Outfit (probably SoV) had just taken a base and was in the process of capping it. Being a trigger happy sniper, I didn't care to sit around doing nothing and instead went looking for trouble, forgoing the ubah XP from the cap (this was before I was a member).

After a good 10 minutes of careful wandering, I found a tower belonging to TR and saw some occasional guys pouring out of the tower and running away from me to a battle with NC. As luck would have it, there was a tree with a trunk angled at 45 degrees from the ground, so I was able to climb up to the top and be concealed in the leaves while having a perfect view of the tower. Next thing I know, a red pops out of the tower and I let the bolt fly. Direct hit, but instead of running the target comes to a dead stop and lets me get the killing blow. Seconds later another comes out of the tower, and BLAM same scenario. 10 seconds later, a new target pokes their head out the door and they get tagged. Now this person was smart enough to run back inside and heal up, so I did not get the kill. Over the course of 20 minutes, the same 6-8 people would poke their head out and get tagged. Sometimes 2 would run out and run around like crazy chickens but they almost always ended up dead if they stayed outside the tower for more than 20 seconds. At one point I even had TWO dudes run around close to the base of my tree and not spot me. At this point I am laughing so uncontorably from keeping a squad bunkered up in a tower, my aim is all FUBAR and I can't hit anything. Someone in a turret finally spots me in the tree and kills me.

The quote of the night came half way into the ordeal: "There’s at least 3 snipers out there, WTF do we do?!"

There is a sick satisfaction from making 6-8 much better equipped people look like total noobs. That my friends, is the emotion that drives the sniper.

As far as upping your kill count, 3/4 of my kills have come from tower and base captures. Our major advantage comes from that fact that we can be anywhere…and there is a WHOLE lot of “anywhere” surrounding a tower / base. What I like to do is camp behind a tree or rock, and focus on the top of a tower. Their snipers and other assorted noobs will creep to the edge, and that is when you let the bolt fly. If it is a sniper, they are probably already zoomed in and unable to react fast enough before you can get the second shot off. The other melee noobs are usually focused somewhere else and do not realized they just got KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT! Second shot is easy.

Anyway, if you have patience and some creativity, sniping can be the best time of your PS career. Oh yea, and you gotta not mind dying. A lot. You also gotta not mind running on foot, dodging Vanguards and other assorted baddies for 20 minutes, finding that PERFECT perch to snipe from…and having some lucky noob walk up behind you and jackhammer you to death. Often.

So when are they going to implement head shots? :>

Yeah, it would appear I've found the right job then. I usually either go ahead or break slightly off from my squad when I can so that I can setup a position high and away from the actual action. My favorite was getting trapped alone and stopping by an adjacent enemy base, taking up a position and picking off their guys as they lined up to spawn vehicles. Very few I capped, all walked away with bruises or busted rides until finally someone on their catwalk spotted me.

Did it have any real effect on the nearby battle? I dunno, but it was fun watching people scatter when Joe died waiting for his Lightning...

I also like picking on far away MAX's who think they are artillery pieces...

Is there a strategy thread for this?
