I've been playing this for a few days and overall I think it's pretty good. It's still not the second coming of PlanetSide, but the overall concept is good and the it seems to have a bit more depth than the Battlefield games.
Missions
Everything in the game is based on sequential missions. Where you have to accomplish a specific task to get to the next task and eventually a victory. If you've played 2142, it's kind of like how you take out the Titans but a little deeper. There are also side missions like capturing spawn points, destroying equipment, etc, that you can engage in depending on your class.
So, for example, in the current map in the Beta, if you're the humans, you have to first build an EMP using an engineer class. Then once that's built the strogg shields collapse and you need to have an assault class place explosives on a grate to permit access to the control console. Then once that's done, the infiltrator class has to hack to the control console.
Classes
Each class has it's own unique abilities, and while I favor the Opressor/Field Ops class which runs the artillery, you kinda have to mix up what classes you use because depending on the situation there may be little use for artillery, etc.
Game play
Overall this game is much more twitchy than average. Battlefield is rather sedate by comparison. It's not quite as hyper as say UT, but it's definitely more on that end of the spectrum. It's also the kind of game where there's no quick kills. Like if I take a shotgun to somebody's face, I still have to shoot them twice to drop them. The only one-shot kills in the game are with the sniper-rifle/rail gun and a head shot.
Technical Difficulties
If you decide to play it, make sure you turn off shadows. The shadows totally hose graphic performance. I have everything cranked to the max with anti-aliasing and all that and it works great, but the moment I turn on shadows it starts stuttering badly.
There's a few glitches I've run into here and there, but compared to some betas I've seen, it's pretty solid. I haven't had many crashes, and I found that if I run it in a window, it's still fast and I can ALT+TAB very smoothly.
Overall
Like I said, it's no PlanetSide, but I think it's a step in the right direction with a bit more strategery to it than similar games. Still it lacks that larger sense of strategic mission, and community that PlanetSide had.
